Kurt W. Porter is a Brainerd, Minnesota attorney and shareholder with Severson Porter Law. Admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 2010, he focuses his practice on real estate, business law, and
civil litigation throughout the Brainerd Lakes Area and Central Minnesota.

Kurt is an MSBA Board Certified Real Property Specialist (fewer than 3% of Minnesota attorneys
hold specialty certification). He is a regular presenter for Minnesota CLE on real estate topics, including the developing law of short-term rentals, and he frequently provides pro bono assistance on matters
concerning real estate law.

Background

Kurt earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with minors in statistics and English from the University of North Dakota. He received his Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law and served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Erik J. Askegaard, District Court Judge for Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

Community & Service

Kurt serves the Brainerd Lakes Area through organizations including the Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project and the Coordinating Council for domestic violence. He serves as Secretary-Treasurer for the Crow Wing County / Aitkin County Bar Association and as Church Council Vice-President for Lord of Life Lutheran Church. He also volunteers as a mock trial judge with the MSBA High School Mock Trial program.

In 2022, Kurt received the Minnesota Justice Foundation’s Outstanding Service Award for his
private practice pro bono work with Legal Aid Services of Northeastern Minnesota.
